Definition
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that manifests in childhood with symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and/or inattention.
Will persist into adulthood in the majority of cases.
The symptoms affect cognitive, academic, behavioral, emotional, and social functioning.
Currently, there are three different types of ADHD specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition,Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR):
Inattentive,
Hyperactive/impulsive,
Both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive.
Qualitatively the core symptoms of ADHD will differ according to sex, with boys more likely to exhibit the hyperactive/impulsive subtype (vs. girls).
These symptoms often change with time as hyperactive and impulsive behaviors recede during adolescence, and
inattention predominates among adults with ADHD.
